Smartphrases

SmartPhrases are a feature in Epic that allows users to pull frequently used text and chart data into a note. If you find that you are typing the same thing repeatedly or trying to add the same chart data to every note, you should use a SmartPhrase.

How SmartPhrases work

SmartPhrases may be as short as a single sentence (e.g., .hpibackpain might include a sentence stating the patient does not have any “red flag” symptoms) or as long as an entire note template. They can be created by individual users, shared with or discovered by other users, or made more widely available as department-level or hospital-wide SmartPhrases, with the help of your hospital’s IT department. You can also use SmartPhrases created by others.

Implementing SmartPhrases with your team

You can set up SmartPhrases yourself! We’ll show you how, with tutorials, templates, and common SmartPhrases to get you started. Your HealthIT can help you implement more complex system SmartPhrases that can be seen by everyone in your institution at a facility level. They can also help you embed other elements, like website hyperlinks, QR codes, signatures, and SmartLists, in the SmartPhrase.
